What We Do

Pas de Cheval Horse Rescue is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the
rehabilitation, retraining and rehoming of racehorses.

Every year in the US, more than 10,000 racehorses are shipped to Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered. Many of them are young, but perhaps too slow for the track or have sustained injuries that owners aren't willing to spend the time or money on. You can read more about that here.

The wonderful thing about these ex-racehorses, usually Thoroughbreds or Quarter Horses, is their innate athletic abilities, resilient personalities + high level of intelligence. With proper retraining, they can make wonderful riding and companion horses, excelling in a variety of disciplines.

Life at the track is very different from a typical riding stable. These horses need a lot of time, patience and nurturing. Often they need to regain trust in people, learn to socialize with other horses and be taught it is possible to be ridden in harmony.

Off The Track racehorses are sometimes associated with being nervous, flighty, hard to handle and hard to maintain. However, each horse is different. Through our program we get to know their individual personalities that way we can customize their care and training.

Our mission is to keep horses protected from slaughter,
a common Ending for retired racehorses.

Location

CERRILLOS, NEW MEXICO

Pas de Cheval Horse Rescue is located in Cerrillos, New Mexico.

We are just south of Santa Fe, conveniently located near ‘The Downs’ racetrack in Albuquerque and centrally located to Sunland Park in Las Cruces, as well as Zia Park in Hobbs.

We’ve spent years connecting with track trainers, owners and breeders, who are looking to find a long and happy life for their horses after the track. Occasionally we accept owner surrenders and other rescues.

Since we typically specialize in rescuing horses directly from the track, there are a number of other rescues that specialize in abuse, abandonment and severe neglect cases, which we can direct you to, if interested!
